What is a democracy?

A democracy is defined as a system of government in which the population exercises power, typically through elected representatives. This means that in a democratic system, citizens have the opportunity to participate in decision-making processes, often by voting for their leaders and influencing laws and policies. The essence of democracy is centered around the principles of equality and individual rights, where the government is accountable to the people it serves.

In contrast to the correct definition of democracy, a government led by a single ruler does not allow for widespread participation or representation, which is fundamental to democratic governance. Similarly, a system governed by a monarchy primarily involves rule by a royal family, which can limit citizens' direct involvement in their governance. Lastly, a system based on religious law typically places authority in a specific religious framework, limiting the secular participation that is characteristic of a democracy. Thus, the key aspect of democracy is the empowerment and engagement of the population in their governance, particularly through elected representatives, which distinguishes it from these other forms of government.
